NaPoWriMo 2018, Day 14: "The Pool and Narcissus" by Thomas Gorn
The Pool and Narcissus
To K.W., who will never read this.
When a wind disordered the surface,
when the little lives lived in that place
clouded the depths with hungry or playful
twists, his face burned, his throat flooded with bile.
He would have abandoned his mirror then,
but the waters settled down clear and smooth
before he could move himself to move.
The pool, quick pond no longer, grew again
nothing, nothing but himself displayed.
And so he stayed.
