NaPoWriMo 2018, Day 15: "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" by Carl Bettis
Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep
Sometimes as I'm going to sleep, I snag
a happy notion floating by--
an idea so supremely glad,
it can substitute for happiness.
I can unplug happiness from my body
and snap this thought into its place.
An idea so natural and ugly
(like a piece of the lower intestine
or the squirming, veinous heart)
it can't be spoken. Even though I grab the pen
and paper I keep by the bed, I write nothing.
It won't fit words. So I play its color and motion
over in my mind, a movie looping endlessly, endlessly
I rise and fall on its waves, this thought
that loves me and is a mother to me now,
that rocks me to sleep...
I relax... I let it go
and look for it when I wake, hoping
it has washed up on morning's beach.
It hasn't. Only shells, sea glass, driftwood,
only the usual marvels.
