Until, That Is

I swell with love for nature,
until a rolling sweet-gum
ball twists my ankle,
I step in dog shit
or a bird poops on my head.

Such love for humanity!
--Until someone jostles me
or wants to talk or
at book sales I race
with other bibliophiles.

And so full for love of God
am I, until I notice
spiders fattening
on helpless bound moths
and all these bruised reeds broken.*
