Naked Tree

Tree Parable

And so our nation, my people, from our long dream
of liberty woke to heavy tyranny
and sighed. We let our eyes adjust
to the false light the State
and its false prophets provided. We agreed
falsely to see, feigningly to fumble
over dead ground and dying bodies to our weakday weariness,
putting off the fight to make a living,
as we put of living--
trees that hold back blossom and fruit
to push out more twigs for kindling,
for today. For today,
we weren't the ones being burned.
