Golden eagle foot

Despair is the Thing with Talons

(With apologies to Emily Dickinson)

Despair is the thing with talons
that weighs upon the chest,
and will not let a person rise
and will not let them rest

and heaviest in the dawn is felt,
and bright must be the morn
that could raise that leaden beast
that leaves so many worn.

It finds me in the widest bed
and in the love-crammed cot.
It takes no dainties from my hand,
it will not be bought.
