A significant segment of American society, and not only conservative evangelicals, crave a king. The trend towards an imperial presidency predates T---p, but our regress to monarchy is accelerating.

Large parts of the populace, both poor and elite, do not want or believe in democracy, or equality, or freedom except what money can buy. Corporations are people, but not all people are. Faced with a pandemic, the overriding concern is how it will affect the stock market.

The calf and the crown. One hand clutching cash, the other clenched into a fist.

America never has lived up to its ideals. We've betrayed them continuously as long as we've existed. Nevertheless, the sinner can be saved as long as they have a soul to save. But to abandon the ideals we fail is to throw our soul away.

I fear we've done that.
